Some undefined number of months ago we started to get a sneaking suspicion that we may have done something illegal. You see, there are two kinds of people, those who are handy and those who call people who are handy. My husband and I find ourselves in the latter category. So when we bought our house two years ago we had someone fix a number of things to make the house generally liveable. And since we were adventurous we actually bought two houses so we had this same individual do work on both houses. Now, when the work was being done on the other house, the workman made some references that I only was able to understand a year or so later, meaning that he was doing something the city would require a permit for. If he had just come out and said, ‘hey, I’m going to do this illegal thing for you’ – I would have known right there that it was illegal. But he wasn’t that blunt.
So through a number of nudgings from unlikely sources my husband and I finally realized we had a problem, we had to call the city to report ourselves to the permitting police. So in preparation for selling our house, we did just that. And we were so proud of ourselves. You know, we had done the hard thing, we tattled on ourselves. Obviously we would be rewarded for our honesty. But as God would have orchestrated it, there was a bit of a twist to the story. In our calling on ourselves we found out that there were two open permits on our house, one was 30 years old! So needless to say this made a good deal of our property kind of illegal. Wow. Geez, God, that’s kind of surprising. But God wasn’t surprised even a little. So the last month and a half has been very full of learning opportunities and chances to trust God with many unknowns. But He’s been faithful. He’s minimized the damages, provided the funds to pay for it, grown us in our faith and strengthened our marriage through the process. And in His perfect timing it’s looking very likely that we will be able to put our house on the market this upcoming week!
Well that IS exciting! And that reminds me, the dates on the sidebar of this blog are totally theoretical and if they happen to coincide with reality that is just icing on the cake. So up next is massive deep cleaning, more pictures of our legal second house and probably a few trips to Salvation Army to round out the weekend- to the praise of his glory.
Keep it legal, Clearwater!
